Ta Karamanlidika tou Fani

“Karamanlidika tou Fani” is a charming space that operates both as a point of sale and a delicatessen for traditional products, while at the same time serving these products to customers, prepared according to traditional recipes. It is a listed building located in the center of Athens, on Evripidou Street, which is itself preserved due to the traditional uses of its ground-floor shops.

The design was based on the central idea of the urban food market, where different shops coexist under the same roof. The concept draws inspiration from the nearby Varvakios Market, reinforcing the strong atmosphere of old Athens.

The building’s original elements, such as the stone walls and the old ceiling, were preserved. Inside the building, the volumes corresponding to the different uses—functioning as individual “shops”—are marked by illuminated signs for the products, which ultimately also serve as the store’s signage. In this way, the façades of the listed building are freed from additional signage and can be fully revealed.

The seating areas are arranged between these volumes, recreating the lively atmosphere characteristic of traditional food markets.
