HETEROCLITO

The wine bar Heteroclito has been operating in the center of Athens since 2012. The shop occupies a corner location, is particularly small, and is situated within the network of pedestrian streets in the city center.

The space was designed from the outset with wine as its protagonist, providing the main inspiration for the design. The chosen name, “Heteroclito” (meaning heteroclite or eclectic), introduced a sense of freedom in the design approach, while the French origin of the owner connected the project with the tradition of French wine bars. The aim was to create something already classic — a space that carries a sense of history without necessarily having experienced it.

Within this small 25 sq.m. space, the bar was placed at the center of the room so that it could serve visitors from all sides, allowing visual contact and creating a sense of familiarity and an almost contemplative relationship around wine. Its presence extends all the way to the street, as the glass façades do not act as a strong boundary but rather as a transition toward the city, thus maximizing the capacity to serve the public.

The bar was designed with a wooden base in a classical style and topped with a green marble surface, emphasizing its emblematic role. Above it, a suspended metal structure for hanging glasses was installed, where the glasses themselves define the volume, shimmering like bubbles. The main lighting of the shop is concealed, so that the visible light fixtures are not the ones that actually illuminate the space.
