POLLY MAGGOO
Who, then, is Polly Maggoo?
A cult film of the 1960s, a bar in Paris, a mysterious woman?
Polly Maggoo might also be Athens itself, transforming as its neighborhoods change.
Polly Maggoo opened in Metaxourgeio in 2009. The central idea of the design was based on the deconstruction of the French bistro, its adaptation to the industrial context of the Metaxourgeio district, and the simple, earthy culinary approach of chef Giorgos Iliou, centered on a deep respect for raw ingredients.
Different materials were used in their original state, emphasizing clarity and the importance of materiality. Cement mortar was selected for both the floors and the walls, while birch plywood was used for the bar, the wine cabinet, the large mirror, and the tables. Metal was used for the bases of the tables and stools. The external metal-framed glazing was designed to extend across the full height of the space and was painted in the color of red wine.
The bar was placed centrally in order to maintain a close relationship with all the tables. For the lighting, spherical opaline fixtures were chosen, reflected in the corner glazing and the large mirror, creating a sense of continuity. In addition, custom lighting fixtures were constructed from objects formerly used in the textile industry, producing distinctive shadow patterns. A solid sheet-metal staircase leads to the mezzanine, where the kitchen is located.
