House on Kyprou Street

The renovation concerns an apartment located in the Kypseli area, in an apartment building dating from the 1970s. It is a residence of 108 m² with an elongated floor plan, cross-ventilated and originally composed of separate, independent rooms.

The owner’s intention was to transform the apartment into a modern and functional space where she could both live and work, while preserving the atmosphere of old Athens.

The living areas were unified, while the bedrooms and the bathroom remained within a more private zone.

The traces of the former spatial boundaries were incorporated into the new design. The “imprints” of the removed walls were highlighted through the insertion of marble strips, creating an interesting result where the different floor finishes meet — the wooden flooring and the mosaic floors.

These conceptual boundaries were also followed for the positioning of new constructions, such as the wardrobe made of birch plywood and the suspended metal structure, which varies in height depending on the space it encounters and carries objects and plants on its glass shelves.

The kitchen was given a central position within the space, with the island playing a leading role, while new openings were created towards the lightwell to improve the natural lighting of the apartment.

Soft color tones were selected for the common areas, while more intense colors were used in the more private zones.

Following the same retro logic, the WC was designed with mosaic tiles on the floor and small burgundy square tiles on the walls, while the main bathroom was designed using large slabs of Tinos marble.
